Dana Huyge will present a recital of music for viola at 5pm Saturday August 14th, at the United Presbyterian Church (25 Church Street) in Cortland. He will be accompanied by Kathy Hansen at the piano. The string quartet Quartetto Appassionata, of which Huyge is a member, will also be part of the recital. Music will include sonatas by Brahms and Hindemith as well as a quartet by Shostakovich. Admission is free and open to the public.

Dana Huyge, who will receive his Master's degree from the Eastman School of Music in the spring of 2011, began playing violin at the age of four, and studied under the Suzuki method for the better part of eight years before he switched to viola. His teachers include Yizhak Schotten, Caroline Coade, Melissa Matson, and George Taylor, as well as Kitt Dod of the Syracuse Symphony.

Mr. Huyge is currently an active performer as violist, violinist, and singer with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes, the Greece Symphony Orchestra, the University of Rochester YellowJackets, as well as chamber and solo appearances in the Central New York area. He has also served as Principal Violist of the Eastman Philharmonia, and the Penfield Symphony Orchestra.

Kathy Hansen, pianist, is a native of Washington State. After receiving her Bachelor of Music degree at Washington State University and doing graduate work at the University of Iowa, she resided in New York City for twelve years where she was a faculty member at the Diller-Quaile School of Music, the Westchester Conservatory of Music, and the Great Neck Suzuki Music Center. She has appeared as a collaborative artist in a number of recordings, including “Relentless” with Jamal Rossi and “The Pulse of an Irishman” with Steven Stull and other local area artists. She currently maintains a busy teaching studio in Ithaca and serves as a regular staff accompanist at Ithaca College.

This recital was originally planned to feature Josh Oxford as accompanist, but he was involved in a serious auto accident a few weeks ago. Kathy Hansen has graciously agreed to take his place in this performance.

The Quartetto Appassionata includes Timmothy Baker and Yixuan Song (violins), Dana Huyge (viola) and Taide Prieto (cello). All students or recent graduates from the Eastman School of Music, the group was formed in June 2010 in order to read chamber music and bring the joy of music to others. The Quartet has played numerous engagements around Central New York, including events for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and Dr. David Fettler, former Assistant Conductor to Leopold Stokowski. The Quartet is planning a recital in Rochester on August 15th, which will include the works of Samuel Barber and Ludwig van Beethoven.

Publicity and organizational support for this recital was provided by Cortland Music, Inc. with funds from a NYSCA Decentralization grant and the Ralph R. Wilkins Foundation.
